Hoek
Because of its specific shape, the volume has no true front or back. It addresses the intersection as a whole. The stairwell functions as a campanile, offering orientation.
The aim was a sober volume that settles naturally into the new green environment planned on the site. The building is partially recessed, providing space at ground level for the required parking and the entrance to the shared stairwell. The parking level was very deliberately kept partially above ground to allow daylight in and create a pleasant, usable space. Levels 1 to 3 contain four generous one-bedroom apartments and one two-bedroom apartment. Terraces wrap around the entire building, allowing for full-height windows with maximum light and views. On levels 1 and 2 the terrace depth is limited, but recesses create more generous seating spots each time. The top-floor apartment is set well back, resulting in a large terrace encircling the dwelling.
In terms of materials, the building combines timber (curved volume) and brick (stairwell). The CLT slabs of the terraces remain visible, revealing the structure behind. The curved façades are finished with dark-stained timber infill panels, alternating with vertical glazed sections. The ground-floor façade is finished with an alternating slatted structure that both forms the parapet of the level +1 terrace and continues up to level +2 in the areas overlooking neighbouring properties. Fine steel balustrades are used on levels +2 and +3.
A large communal garden on the ground floor is shielded from the bustle of the Antwerpsesteenweg by a brick wall and a spacious green buffer. Separate from the main building, an outbuilding houses bicycle storage and the shared waste room. This volume is positioned against the neighbour’s garage block, allowing it to fit harmoniously into its surroundings.
